Here lies Intel, brutally murdered, the culprit, one Dr. Lisa Su. - It's so good to see you all here today. Could there be a more beloved CEO in the tech space right now? (screaming softly) Sit down, techno king. Dr. Su was not merely content to save AMD from bankruptcy, she just got on stage at Computex2021 to deliver a flurry of body blows to both Intel and Nvidia with a single simple message. AMD is back, and AMD won't wait for them to pick up the pace.
And then there was also a bunch of more complicated messages. And if I'm going to get to all of it,Perhaps the most interesting announcement Dr. Su made was AMD's plans for the "non-X" series of Zen 3 Ryzen 5,000 desktop CPUs. I mean, remember that guys? When we used to have X and then we used to have non-X which was pretty much the same thing, but cheaper and could usually be overclocked? That went away with Ryzen 5000, except, it's almost funny how recently we made this video begging AMD to release Zen 3 APUs only to have them show up right now.
So not only are the Ryzen 55600 G, and Ryzen 7 5700 G APUs with very comparable specs to the already existing 5600 and 5700, they're going to have respectable Vega 8 Graphics and they seem to be officially taking over the role that non-X skews had in the product lineup making them an even better value thanks to the onboard graphics. Freaking a man like man, if I'm Intel right now I have got to be desperately trying to clear warehouse space by unloading CPUs so I have room for all the pallets of deodorant that I'm going to need after watching this keynote. By the way, get subscribed because we have a video coming on just such a weird backdoor fire sale that Intel seems to be running right now.
So at this point, AMD has thoroughly beaten Intel in the server space, the highend desktop workstation space, and now the consumer desktopgaming and mobile spaces. But now they're threateningone of the last little niches Intel held onto, you know? High-end CPU with onboardgraphics that you can use while you try to finda real graphics card. Now we'll need to see for ourselves what the benchmarks look like, but given these specs aren'tsignificantly lower tier than the X series skews, thislooks like a great option for basically everybody giventhe current market conditions.
Zen 3 CPU performance now, GPU upgrade path later. One area it looks like Intelwill still only be competing against itself though isthe low-end APU market. When pressed about thelack of Ryzen 3 APUs, AMD hinted that the currentreality of supply and demand for desktop processors meansthat they have no plans to roll out anythinglike that anytime soon.
That really sucks forbudget conscious gamers, but, I also understand that if you can only get so many wafers it's better to launch a fewproducts you can actually supply than a whole whack load ofproducts that you can't. Oh, though, there might beone way to get a Ryzen 3 APU if you really want. AMD is dropping new Ryzen Pro products. They didn't announcethem during the keynote but they said we couldtalk about them anyway in case anyone is interested. I'm not sure thatthey're that interesting, but hey, here they are. Yep, those are business CPU'sall right, for business.
Now, moving on from business, we have a separate companion video about AMD's new RDNA2-Based Radeon mobile GPU's with performance testingand first impressions. But the short version for you guys here is that AMD is claiming up to43% lower power consumption for a given performance level versus previous gen architecture. And while RDNA1 isn'tamazing by today's standards, that's still nothing to sneeze at. Three skews are coming, the Radeon on RX 6800M with 40 compute units and 12gigs of GDDR6 that AMD claims easily beats and RTX 3070 Mobile and is actually competitivewith an RTX 3080 Mobile. Then we've got the Radeon RX6700M with 36 compute units and 10 gigs around aimingat Mobile RTX 3070, and the RX 6600M. The first Navi 23-based GPU with 28 compute unitsand eight gigs of RAM to take on the Mobile RTX 3060.
The RX 6800M and 6600Mwill be shipping in laptops starting in early June, while the 6700M will begin shipping "soon", TM. That's not all the graphics news though, we finally got a preview ofFidelityFX Super Resolution, AMD's long awaited answer to Nvidia DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling. We only really got a shortglimpse of what it looks like and if I had to guess, I'd say that's because AMD didn't really want uslooking too closely at it. I wish I could say it's competitive but it's a lot softerthan I would have expected and I honestly have mydoubts being competitive with DLSS 2.0, which even then doesn't quite match native rendering but at least it's close enough that you probably won't notice while you're popping off head shots.
As for why it looks the wayit does, according to AMD, the algorithm they're using isa spatial upscaling algorithm that happens at the endof the graphics pipeline when the scene has alreadybeen rendered, which... Oh, well, that kind ofexplains it, doesn't it? That is a much less sophisticated approach to the point where itseems like it's basically a post-processing effect with some additionalsmoothing applied at the end presumably to mask errors.
Up to four modes can be selected though depending on the implementation in game with AMD claiming FPSimprovements of up to 300% with the performance mode. That seems a bit ambitious so we're going to have to wait and see. (X-Files theme song) AMD wasn't done with themiddle fingers to Intel though, remember Ultra books? Intel's proprietary specification for thin and light notebooks? Well, now AMD is trying theirhand at something similar but for gaming laptopscalled AMD Advantage.
They've stopped short of callingit a certification program so it's more like pirate code then, but essentially, if you see AMD Advantage on a laptop, you know that AMD helped directly with the design process, and you can count on there being a minimum spec. AMD specifically calls outRyzen and Radeon Mobile, 144 Hertz or better, IPS or OLED displays with FreeSync Premium, andNVME SSD and AMD Smartshift and Smart Access Memory both supported and enabled out of the box. And aside from the hardware alone, AMD also says that its about the experience.
So they're targeting over a hundred FPS gaming at 1080P less than three milliseconds of display lag, and over 10 hours of video playback on battery at 300 nits brightness. Oh, and this is a fun one, the WASD cluster also needs to be cooler than 40 degrees for now with lower targets coming in the future.
The first two laptops with AMD Advantage, Asus' Strix G513 Advantageedition, and HP's Omen 16 will be rolling out later this month with more to come from otherpartners like Lenovo and MSI. Man, I'd say it's been so long since AMD has had a compellingtop-end mobile solution but, it's so long I don'teven think that covers it. I don't think they'veever had both the CPU and GPU aligned like this. It's both beautiful and scary all at once.
I hope Intel's new CEOhas a strong stomach because it is going to bea heck of a ride from here. Now, AMD pre-briefed uson some of the keynote because they understand that making videos requires scripting time andediting time and export time, but then they left part of it as a "make sure to watch it all" kind of thing which demonstrates thatthey don't understand that you need time toscript, edit and export. So this section is reservedfor anything we felt needed to be hastily edited in. Thanks a lot, AMD.
AMD is going to be in cars? Yeah, their APUs and dedicatedGPUs in Tesla model S and X. I'm not sure why. Pat, get it, fine. I believe there's also more hazing about the Samsung and Radeoncollab with no firm details. Confirmation thatFidelityFX Super Resolution will be available to allGPU's, including NVIDIA's back as far as Vega and the RX 500 series. And then there's the big news, AMD's is new 3D triplets.
They're basically what itsounds like, 3D stack triplets, which means for example, a dedicated cache die could be added on topof each compute complex for significantly higher density. The example I gave was a Ryzen 9 5900X with 192 megabytes of cache, that's a lot of cache, which ran a full 12% faster in gaming than the stock 5900Xdose in the same package. They're claiming that the 3D stacking tech doesn't use micro-bumps asIntel's (indistinct) does. And as a result, it can achieveup to 15 times the density while being three timesmore energy efficient. That's bad news for Intel, but for AMD it represents a 200 times density increase over the current 2D layout. Oh, and even worse news for Intel, AMD says they're going to have it out probably by the end of the year. - All in all then, AMD is riding on ameteoric high right now. I bet Dr. Su feels pretty good about the direction she'smanaged to steer a company that we all thought wasdone for a decade ago. And all of AMD's engineersand support staff should feel extremely proud of what they've been ableto accomplish as well.
I hope this is just thetip of the iceberg though because let's face it, beyond the fanboyism, beyond the buyer's remorse, beyond even the tech industry, everybody likes an underdog story and AMD has been an ultimateunderdog comeback story. Though, it's not lookinglike AMD is going to be much of an underdog storyfor long at this pace. So, maybe one day soon, we'll get a story of fire and vengeance from an Intel scorn. We got hands-on with aAsus' AMD Advantage laptop and it is a lot moreinteresting than you might think which is really saying something. On the left side is where we get the slot for the dual sim and memory card which makes storage expandable by 256GB at no cost of an extra sim. We’ve got another microphone up at the top of this device as well so it records stereo audio and we’ve also got an infrared sensor remote for controlling supported appliances. In terms of setting up the device.
It took over 3 minutes to fully set up without putting the fingerprint and a major part was loading into MIUI 10.3 based on Android 9of course. My first impression of the build quality was mainly on the fingerprint magnet that it is. The Redmi Note 8 has a Gorilla Glass 5 Screen on the front, as I mentioned earlier and this takes a leaf from its predecessor, the RedmiNote 7. I even made a drop, scratch, and bend test for the Redmi Note 7 which I think you should check out. Seeing that they’re both similar in terms of what you get, I can go ahead and say this would be a sturdy build and it would last the time you have it for.
The device itself protrudes with the camera bump, the case that it comes with help to smoothen things out a little and the case also has the clip that opens and protects the charging port. The Redmi Note 8 also carries some weight at 188 grams according to my measurement, it was 190 on the site and bumping the case on it takes it up further by 207 grams This device has a 6.3-inch display, it's and it has a screen resolution of 2340 by 1080, essentially FHD at 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
And a PPI of over 400 (409) I watched quite couple of videos with this device and it was pretty decent and sharp, quite bright as well and of course. It views or streams YouTube videos in 1080p. My only gripe with this device is that in white screens or bright screens it bleeds like a vignette is around the display. It’s not a major thing but it’s there. Overall, in terms of day-to-day use, the device colors felt familiar and I got used to it. The Redmi Note 8 also has night mode right in the display settings, it affects the native apps, gallery, settings, dialer, messages, wait.. to doesn’t work in messages. I don’t know if this was intentional but dark mode doesn’t work in the Messages app, dark mode even works in the PlayStore. For those who are fans of gestures, you also get gesture controls and can interchange the buttons on the home row….. and you can hide the notch too… don’t do that.
You also get to create a second space on your phone, I mentioned this in the note 7 reviews earlier. The second space is basically like having a work and a home phone and 2 different passwords for each. So for instance my main space is a long Land my second space is a short L or you could use 2 different fingers to unlock your phone and get into 2 separate spaces. So for instance I could use my right finger to unlock my main space and left finger to unlock my second space. You could also create dual versions of apps like Facebook and more games. Speaking of day-to-day use, if you’re consumingmedia on this device, you’ll pretty much be fine as it’s very familiar.
There’s nothing fancy like stereo speakersbut the speakers on here are pretty loud, downward facing and with all downward facingspeakers, they can easily be blocked when you’re holding it in this horizontal position. In terms of how it sounds, here’s a quickdemo of both the speaker and microphone. From what I could tell it sounded quite niceand loud while the microphone quality was decent as well. Nothing major about it but what are your thoughtsabout how they sound? Let me know in the comments below.
Now moving on, the specs of the Redmi Note8 brings with it some interesting elements. I mentioned earlier that we get the Snapdragon665 which is an Octa-core processor and its companion in terms of the GPU is the Adreno610 Graphics Processor with Qualcomm’s 3rd Gen. AI Engine. With the Note 8, you get a minimum of 3G ofRAM, a maximum of 4GB of RAM then you also get a minimum 32GB storage and a maximum of128GB of storage. My model here is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storagewhich is still expandable with a memory card up to 256GB like I mentioned earlier and thisexact model on Jumia right now costs 64,970 Naira only.

And Oh, if you were wondering, the Glo band28(700) wasn’t listed in the specs but Glo now supports the Band 3(1800) which is listedso an upgraded Glo SIM would do just fine. Overall browsing experience in terms of networkspeeds were similar to the Note 8 Pro, the elder brother of this guy. Using social media apps ran smoothly and Ididn’t notice any crashes at all but of course in usual Xiaomi tradition, you getads popping in frequent places.
Gameplay did run smoothly on the Redmi Note8 in terms of gaming graphics, I’d say it’s above average. My 1 hour gaming session barely had much ofan effect on the battery by less than 20% and I did experience some slight heating butit went away as soon as I stopped. In terms of charging speed, the default chargerin the box brought this guy up from 0 - 30% in 30 minutes and it took another 30 minutesto get to 58% so that’s 1 hour to get to 58% from 0 and then it took about 2 hoursto get full. About the gaming again, the Note 8 Pro, thehigher version has got a heat sync pipe to Cool things down and a dedicated gaming Processorwhich is the first device to utilize it so I look forward to how that would work out.
The Note 8 seems fine but if you’re goingfor gaming you may want to consider the elder brother, the Note 8 Pro In terms of touch sensitivity, the Note 8was pretty fast with responses, multitasking was smooth and apps did load quite accuratelymaking the experience smooth. During my use as well, I also try to utilizethe screen record feature. This feature doesn’t exist in the notification/ Control panel you need to use an app.
Thankfully they provide the default app whichyou can use and it’s just there in the tools folder and even clips you’ve recorded inthe screen recorder app. Screenshots are however up in the notificationsand can also be utilized for scroll shots as well. The fingerprint scanner is not the fastestin the world but it does work and face unlock was a little quicker but Xiaomi does warnthat it’s not as secure since it’s not an Infrared scanner or something of the sort.
The Bluetooth sensor on the Note 8 is 4.2compared to Bluetooth 5.0 on the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Also, there’s literally a feature whereIf you ever feel there’s dust inside your device, you can trigger Clean speaker andit makes this sound while vibrating the internal part to clear what’s inside. Call quality was also okay as well as allthe normal phone features are normal phone features.
For those who may not know XIaomi is now inNigeria so if you ever have an issue you can reach out to them directly. Alright, it’s Camera time and for a 65,000Naira smartphone, 5 cameras is a pretty interesting start. I already mentioned the camera specs earlierbut to re-iterate, on the front of the device we get a 13MP f2.0 aperture lens and on theback of the device, we get a 48MP f1.75 wide sensor, 8MP f2.2 ultra wide sensor and 2 macrosensors which are both f2.4 in aperture.
Resolutions in terms of pictures reach upto 8,000 by 6,000 and it records up to 4K at 30fps. In the camera app, from left to right, youget slow motion mode which you can shoot at 120fps from and a maximum 240fps, Short videowhich shoots only 15 seconds at all zoom levels. You also get video and photo mode at ultrawide, normal and 2x. Next to that is the 48MP camera sensor.
Which is dubbed Ultra HD here. Basically the main difference that you noticeon the compare is that image sizes of your regular shots would be at 3,000 by 4,000 while48MP shots would go up to double that at 6,000 by 8,000. Next to the 48MP is Portrait Mode, Night Modeand Panorama and Pro Mode. As far as photos, I’d say that the portraitmode on this device is actually fast and it produces some good results. It’s not perfect and it also can be softbut it compensates for it somehow by software sharpness. Normal shots were decent but when comparedto 48MP shots they weren’t any where as sharp.
Selfie Portraits were soft as well and thisis all by default because Xiaomi cranks up the beauty filter of your device right outthe box. HDR shots also did look nice as well and interms of the hierarchy of the wide normal and zoom, I think it’s pretty good but wideshots aren’t usually as sharp as the 1x and the 2x also takes the same fate. I’d say that 48MP shots preserve alot ofinformation and detail too.
Just like what we had on the Note 7 The dual 2MP Macro lenses here nice but a2MP camera would get you images with 1600 by 1200 in size and they’re not as highquality as the other cameras on here. In comparison, the normal lens in this shotonly gets this close while the macro lens can go close. In alot of light it would thrive but the imagesize and quality is low.
In good lighting or say you’re outdoorsand there’s alot of lit skyline, night mode would show alot of detail and crank up thesharpness. Even on a small desk there’s a noticeabledifference.
Also the I tried to test the shots of theplant, of course flash brought out the true image but night mode still tries to bringout some elements despite how dark it was in the room.
Video recording quality on the Note 8 is quiteof a mixed bag for me. It records 4K 30 FPS, it does 1080p slow motionat 120 fps and it also does 1080 video at 60fps. Which all sound great on paper but when Itested video on here. I noticed alot of skipped frames and it wasn’tjust once. The Note 8 Pro tries to soften this effectwith what looks like some stabilization but it’s not existent on the Note 8. That’s It for this video guys.
